Tina Turner's lyrics to the song "What's Love Got To Do With It" asks a valid question. How can someone's actions that show supremacy, hate, abuse, or more subtly - apathy, have anything to do with love? Tina Turner was abused but apparently "loved" by her spouse.
The media recently showed us a face of a man with his neck under another man's knee crushing the life out of him. We hear the words "I can't breathe" spoken. Justice is choked away till the only thing justifiable is in knowing this is a sick world we live in.
And we live smack dab in the middle of it all. If we really say we care about our neighbor, love has a LOT to do with it. Being created in God's image means we are created equally. The color of our skin, the job we are fortunate to have, the house we live in, the city we buy our groceries, or the language we speak does not determine our status. When we turn away in apathy because we can't do anything about the injustice, hate, and death, we turn away from the love we have an opportunity to live out.
This world that Jesus came into as a baby and born into poverty, is broken. Jesus came to heal, to restore, to love. He came to save the lost. And the "lost" is anybody with breath left to breathe. So if you and I are breathing, we can put ourselves right in the mix with other "losers".
What does Love got to do with it? God is love and this is what He says,
“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves,
for the rights of all who are destitute.
Speak up and judge fairly;
defend the rights of the poor and needy.” Proverbs 31:8,9
Speak up and breathe out love. Love has a LOT to do with it.
